Brothers for Life

“Siblings are the people we practice on, the people who teach us about fairness and cooperation and kindness and caring – quite often the hard way. ”

~Pamela Dugdale

When I was little, we moved around a lot.  So much, my dad said if he was in the military we probably would have moved less.  Because of that, my siblings and I were (and are) very close.  They were the friends I could count on, that would always be there for me.  Sure we fought like all siblings do (I have the scars to prove it) but we loved each other just as fiercely as we hated each other.

When neighbor kids were busy or my best friend decided to not be my best friend anymore, my sister and brothers were still there.  My sister would scream at me for wearing her clothes and then we would stay up late at night talking and talking like nothing happened an hour before.

Though we are spread out across the US now and rarely get to see each other, when we get together, it’s a blast.  I feel like a kid again when we joke around while our own children play together.  No one besides my husband gets me like my sister and brothers do.  Heck, they have more sympathy for my husband than anyone else does.  They had to live with me longer than he has (so far).

This is what happens when my brother gets a hold of my camera.

I’m praying my kids will see each other as their closest friends.  The small ones look up to the older boys and how the older boys treat the 6 yo is how the 6 yo will treat the 2 yo.  I remind the bigger boys that even though the small ones are annoying (what little brother or sister isn’t), the little ones look up to them and will act how they act.  Treat them with love and they will learn to love.

  • This is so true. There was only my sister and me growing up. We moved away from each other, but for the past 30 years have lived less than an hour away. We see each other more now that the kids are grown. I’m glad we still have a good relationship as we are the only ones left now that our parents are gone.
